2 CONT anniversary of their wedding last Friday, Nov. 29th.
2 CONT Streneous efforts had been put forth by the old couple to keep the mattera
2 CONT profound secret from the rising generation, but alas! alas! old folkssometimes
2 CONT propose but young folks dispose, and while the guileless couple wasbegulled by
2 CONT some very innocent (?) persons into taking dinner with them, therelatives and
2 CONT friends took possession of the domicile, made themselves at home and fellto
2 CONT "getting dinner." When everything was prepared to suit the fastidioustastes of
2 CONT the intruders and self-possessors of somebody's else the old couple weresent
2 CONT for with the plea (which happened to be the truth) that their daughterfrom
2 CONT Rantoul was at their house, and, and, and etc. Well, the old folks came,oh,
2 CONT my! What a time! Who can describe it? Depicted in their countenances were
2 CONT astonishment, surprise, sunshine and we hoped the spirit of forgiveness.But
2 CONT when escorted to the comfortable chairs presented by the friends, and a
2 CONT beautiful stand on which appeared other gifts, was placed before them andthey
2 CONT were requested to cast their eyes toward a fine picture already hungagainst
2 CONT the wall, the old folks were too much overcome to respond to thepresentation
2 CONT speech made by L. H. White, and requested Robert Harris to make aresponse.
2 CONT Then came the dinner, such a dinner as you all imagine would come. Someforty
2 CONT participated in the affair and just about that number assisted in thetask of
2 CONT unloading the table that groaned with the delicacies prepared for theoccasion.
2 CONT May joy and peace continue to abide with Deacon Matthews (sic) and hiswife and
2 CONT when their wedding anniversaries are o'er may we all meet upon the golden
2 CONT shore, there to meet to part no more.

2 CONT Mrs. Susanna Mathews, one of the oldest settlers in this county, died at the
2 CONT home of her daughter, Mrs. Homer Werts, near Frankfort, Ind., last Friday
2 CONT morning. Old age was the cause of her death. The remains were brought to this
2 CONT city on the Big Four Saturday evening and taken to the home of Mrs. Minerva J.
2 CONT Mathews, on West University Avenue in Urbana. The funeral took place from
2 CONT Crystal Lake park this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. G. D. Lawrence conducting
2 CONT the services, and the remains were laid to rest in Mayview cemetery.

2 CONT other and of the second part, Witnesseth, that the said David Ulery andSusanna
2 CONT his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and seventy five
2 CONT dollars in lawful money of the United States to them in hand well and truly
2 CONT paid by the said Jacob Ryder being full payment the receipt where of is hereby
2 CONT acknowledged, have granted, bargained, sold, aliened, released or conveyed and
2 CONT confirmed and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, alien, convey,and
2 CONT confirm unto the said Jacob Ryder and to his heirs and assigns forever,all
2 CONT that following described lot or tract of land situate in the County of
2 CONT Montgomery and State aforesaid it being part of the south east quarter of
2 CONT section number six, Township Three, Range Five east of the meridian linedrawn
2 CONT from the mouth of the Great Miami River, and bounded as follows, viz: Beginning
2 CONT at the north west corner of said quarter, thence running south forty three
2 CONT fales to a stake, thence east sixty fales to a stake, thence north forty three
2 CONT fales to a stake, where the north boundary line of said quarter, thence west
2 CONT sixty fales to the place of beginning, containing sixteen acres and twenty
2 CONT perches, be the same more or less, and all the estate, title, interest,and
2 CONT demand of them the said David Ulery and Susannah his wife, ?????, and to the
2 CONT said premises and every part thereof. Together with all and singular the
2 CONT privileges and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining,

2 CONT the only proper use  and behoof of the said Jacob Ryder his heirs and assigns
2 CONT forever. And the said David Ulery for himself and his heirs executors and
2 CONT administrators doth promise covenant and agree to and with the said JacobRyder
2 CONT his heirs executors administrators and assigns that he is the true and lawful
2 CONT owner of the premises hereby granted and hath good right full power and lawful
2 CONT authority to sell and convey the same in manner and form aforesaid . And

2 CONT will warrant and forever defend the aforesaid premises with theirappurtenances

2 CONT On the 24 day of July AD 1867 there was produced and filed in court herefor
2 CONT probate and record the last will and testament of James Mathews Sr. desd and at
2 CONT the same time came John M. Headden and Samuel W. Rogers the subscribing
2 CONT witnesses thereto who being duly qualified testified to the due and legal
2 CONT execution + attestation thereof and their testimony being reduced to writing
2 CONT and by them subscribed and sworn to is placed on file with said will. And the
2 CONT court being satisfied from the evidence that said deceased was at the time of
2 CONT his death a resdient of Warren County, Ohio, that said will was duly and
2 CONT legally executed and attested, that at the time of the execution thereof the
2 CONT said decedent was of full age, of sound and disposing mind and memory and that
2 CONT in the execution thereof he acted freely and voluntarily and not under any
2 CONT restraint. And the said will being duly stamped with $2.00 U.S. Int Rev stamps
2 CONT it is ordered by the court that it be and the same is hereby admitted to
2 CONT probate as the last will and testament of said decedent and that the said will
2 CONT and the said proof be recorded according to law.
2 CONT Said will and Proof are in these words and figures viz:
2 CONT In the name of the Benevolent Father of all: I, James Mathews, of Wayne
2 CONT township, Warren county, Ohio, do hereby, in view of the uncertainty of life
2 CONT and while in the possession of a sound mind and memory, make the following
2 CONT disposition of my worldly means.
2 CONT FIRST It is my will and I do hereby direct that all my just debts be paid.
2 CONT SECOND. I devise and bequeath to my daughter Hannah Staley, and her heirs, the
2 CONT real estate owned by me and situate in the town of Waynesville, Warren county,
2 CONT Ohio, being that recently purchased of G. B. Carson & wife, which devise is
2 CONT intended by me as her full share of the estate.
2 CONT THIRD. It is my will and I do hereby direct that all my goods and chattels be
2 CONT sold at public sale to the highest bidder (except my wearing apparel),and that
2 CONT all moneys due and owing to me by note, mortgage bond or account be collected,
2 CONT which together with the proceeds of the sale of my chattels I direct to be
2 CONT equally divided amongst my three sons, James, George, and Michael, and my
2 CONT daughter Harriet Todhunter.
2 CONT FOURTH. I give to be equally divided amongst my said three sons, my wearing
2 CONT apparel - leaving to them the division thereof.
2 CONT FIFTH. I hereby nominate and appoint James C. Collett executor of this my last
2 CONT will and testament hereby authorizing and empowering him to compensate,adjust,
2 CONT release, and discharge in such manner as he may deem proper, the debts and
2 CONT claims due me. I do authorize xxxxx executor to
2 CONT execute, acknowledge, and deliver in fee simple a deed for the real estate
2 CONT mentioned in item "Second" of this will to my daughter Hannah Staley and her
2 CONT heirs properly describing the same as in the deed from said Carson
2 CONT & wife estimating its value at seven hundred dollars.
2 CONT I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made. In testimony hereof, I have

2 CONT Mr. James S. Anderson, of our city, now believed to be the oldest undertaker in America, havi
2 CONC ng begun business in that line in 1832, gives his recollections of the cholera period of 183

2 CONT    "The first case made its appearance in May or June of the year 1833. A mover traveling b
2 CONC y wagon through the country stopped here and his wife was taken sick. The citizens went to hi
2 CONC s assistance and the woman's disease was pronounced a case of genuine Asiatic cholera. The ci
2 CONC tizens conveyed the sick woman and the others to a log cabin outside of town, so as not to sp
2 CONC read the infection. This cabin was on the ground now owned by George Mauzy, and where he live
2 CONC s at present. The woman died and the people burned the clothing, &c., supplied the man with m
2 CONC oney and sent him on. I saw this woman just before she died. Myself and several companions we
2 CONC nt to see her out of curiosity. Two weeks afterward the second case appeared, being that o
2 CONC f a young man from Exeter, who was visiting relatives who kept a boarding house where Marbl
2 CONC e Block now stands. He died, and the disease began to spread rapidly. The town at that time c
2 CONC ontained about 500 inhabitants, fully half of whom fled to the country. Of those who remaine
2 CONC d about seventy-five were attacked with the epidemic, of whom about fifty-five died. It was v
2 CONC ery malignant. Besides these quite a number who fled to the country died; some of them, I act
2 CONC ually believe, were scared to death. When the disease first appeared my brother Robert, my pa
2 CONC rtner Ross and myself were all working together. Robert became alarmed, and went to father's
2 CONC , on the farm near Murrayville. The next day he returned for Ross and I, but we concluded t
2 CONC o take our chances and stay in town. We were both young, unmarried men, and we left our sho

2 CONT J'ville" to James S. Anderson on Jan 28, 1837, and that this is recorded in
2 CONT Book O page 117. This should probably be checked (ie, John Ross's wife will be
2 CONT named, and if it is Sarah it would verify that this is the correct John Ross);
2 CONT however, John E. Ross's long association with James S. Anderson strongly
2 CONT suggests that this record is for the correct Ross.

2 CONT November 27, 1884: Mr. John Ross and family, of Twin Grove, have lately moved
2 CONT into the residence of Mr. I. D. Janes, and will hereafter keep house for him.
2 CONT The youngest son of Mr. Ross will carry on the farm.
2 CONT December 4, 1884: On Monday last Mr. I. D. Janes disposed of most of his
2 CONT personal property at a public sale. Fair prices were realized.
2 CONT January 22, 1885: Some time during the night of the 14th inst., Mr. John Ross,
2 CONT Jr., who now carries on the farm owned by Mr. I. D. Janes, had sixteen sheep
2 CONT killed by dogs. In addition to this, five more were badly wounded. He at once
2 CONT reported the loss to the town authorities, and in due course of time will
2 CONT receive pay for the same. Fifty nine dollars were the damages assessed.
2 CONT March 5, 1885: WEDDING BELLS - A very pleasant matrimonial affair took place on
2 CONT Thursday evening of last week at the home of Deacon I. D. Janes, near this
2 CONT place. The contracting parties were Wm. B. Lyon, Esq., of Pontiac, Ill., and
2 CONT Miss Adella Ross, a daughter of Mr. John Ross, brother-in-law of Deacon Janes,
2 CONT and now residing on his place. The ceremony was performed by Rev. W. J. Clark,
2 CONT pastor of the Congregational Church. Only the family and a very few of the most
2 CONT intimate friends were present. The bride and groom, though past the spring-time
2 CONT of life, were radiant with smiles and hopes as of youth. Mr. Lyon is a
2 CONT well-known and highly esteemed citizen of Pontiac, and an extensive dealer in
2 CONT livestock. He left for that city on Friday, taking with him his comely and
2 CONT intelligent wife, who is hereafter to grace his comfortable home.

2 CONT John E. Ross was born in North Carolina, and raised partly in Tennessee and
2 CONT Kentucky. He lost his parents in childhood; reached Illinois at about the age
2 CONT of twenty-one. He was advised by some stranger to get a New Testament, and read
2 CONT it through in order. This he did. He found that it not only told him of the
2 CONT true Saviour, but of the true creed and church. He soon became a Christian. He
2 CONT served several churches where he lived as an elder, viz.: Jacksonville, Little
2 CONT Mackinaw, Bloomington, and Twin Grove.
2 CONT He first married Miss Sarah A. Hedenberg at Jacksonville, Ill., April 17,
2 CONT 1834. Some five years after her death he married Miss Charlotte Hinsdall. He
2 CONT was the father of ten children, six of whom survive him. On the evening of May
2 CONT 8 he had a stroke of apoplexy, of which he died Sunday morning, May 12, 1889,
2 CONT at his sister's, Mrs. L. C. Darst, at this place. He was in the ripe old age of

2 CONT When twenty years of age Mr. Ross became a member of the Congregational
2 CONT church, to this organization he has been a faithful member ever since.
2 CONT Those left to mourn his parting are his faithful wife, one son, Edwin Ross
2 CONT Jr. of Redfield, three daughters. Mrs. Ollie Shepherd of Huron, Mrs. Lela
2 CONT Prindle of Athol, S.D., and Mrs. Lottie Smith of Hawarden, IA., thirteen

2 CONT number of old friends and neighbors from their former home near Burdette,and
2 CONT many Redfield friends.
2 CONT A fine program was rendered during the afternoon. Miss Avery, in herefficient
2 CONT and charming manner, spoke a few words of advice to the bride and groomwhich
2 CONT were received in a very good spirit by them and with much amusement by
2 CONT all. The musical numbers consisted of a duet by Mr. and Mrs. Tiede andtwo solos by Mrs. Petri
2 CONC e, all of which were particularly fitting to theoccasion. Rev. Barter responded with a few fi

2 CONT Mr. Ross recalls that fifty years ago Tuesday was a very different day in
2 CONT Illinois than was last Tuesday in South Dakota. The day that he andHarriet D.
2 CONT Mathews had chosen for their nuptial date proved to be a stormy one. The
2 CONT expectant groom rode into Champaign, Ill. on a steam rode, expecting togo on
2 CONT to Urbana on the train, and from there drive three miles to the bride'shome.
2 CONT The train was abandoned because of the storm, but not to be daunted onsuch an
2 CONT auspicious occasion, Mr. Ross walked the three miles to Urbana through afoot
2 CONT of snow--and in his new wedding boots. Friends had met him as planned, sohe
2 CONT was spared the necessity of walking three miles further into the country.The
2 CONT minister, equally determined, did not fail the case, so the ceremony was
2 CONT consummated in spite of the storm.
2 CONT Mr. and Mrs. Ross left Illinois to come to South Dakota, settling inHolden
2 CONT township, Hand county April 4, 1883. That was their home until they cameto
2 CONT Redfield in 1909 and made their home on College Hill. They are highly
2 CONT respected people held in kindly regard wherever they have lived.  Theyhave three daughters an
2 CONC d one son, who are Mrs. J. G. Shephard of Huron;Mrs. E. W. Smith of Hawarden, Iowa; Mrs. R. A

2 CONT Mrs. E. E. Ross Passed Away Monday; Funeral Services held Wednesday
2 CONT Rest came to another pioneer when Mrs. E. E. Ross passed away at her home
2 CONT in Redfield following an illness of many weeks. Having lived in this community
2 CONT for so many years she was well known and loved by all. The place she held in
2 CONT the hearts of her children and friends can never be filled. Mrs. Ross has led
2 CONT the life of a typical pioneer, enduring many hardships that developed a strong
2 CONT and vigorous Christian character.
2 CONT Harriet Matthews was born March 4, 1855, at Mineral Point, Wisconsin. At
2 CONT the age of seven her parents moved to Illinois, the trip being made in a wagon
2 CONT pulled by oxen. On January 23, 1873, after a beautiful romance that remained
2 CONT ever young, she was united in marriage to Edwin E. Ross, who preceeded her in
2 CONT death three years ago. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Ross with three young children came
2 CONT to South Dakota. They took a claim thirty miles from Redfield. This they
2 CONT transformed into a beautiful farm from which they retired and moved to Redfield
2 CONT in 1909. In 1923 Mr. and Mrs. Ross celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
2 CONT Mrs. Ross has always found a home in the church, having become a member at
2 CONT an early age. She has been a faithful member of the Congregational church, also
2 CONT a charter member of the Welfare Society of this city. Mrs. Ross has always led
2 CONT a life of service in her home and church. She has been a dear and faithful
2 CONT mother, and often took the place of a mother in the hearts of her several
2 CONT grandchildren.
2 CONT She was taken ill in November, from which she suffered acutely. She went
2 CONT quietly into the great beyond early Monday morning surrounded by loved ones who
2 CONT had been at her bedside during her illness.
2 CONT She leaves on son, Edwin S. Ross of Redfield; three daughters, Mrs. J. S.
2 CONT Shephard of Huron, Mrs. R. A. Prindle of Athol, and Mrs. E. W. Smith of
2 CONT Hawarden, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Rolly Harper of Modoc, Indiana; thirteen
2 CONT grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
2 CONT Funeral services were conducted at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon in
2 CONT the Congregational church, Rev. R. M. Miller officiating. Interment was made in
2 CONT Sunbeam cemetery, near the old home in Hand county.

2 CONT ATHOL - Funeral Services for Edwin S. Ross, 89, of Sioux Falls, will be held
2 CONT at 11 am Friday at the Sunbeam Church near Burdette.  The Rev. Douglas Barrows
2 CONT will officiate and burial will be in the Sunbeam Cemetery.  Coleman Funeral
2 CONT Home of Redfield is in charge of arrangements.
2 CONT Mr. Ross, who farmed for many years in the Athol community, died June 27
2 CONT while visiting at the home of his son, Howard, near Athol.
2 CONT Mr. Ross was born May 17, 1877, at Urbana, Ill., and moved toDakota
2 CONT territory with his parents in 1883.
2 CONT He was married ot (sic) Lila Friemark at Midland, June 21, 1909. Mrs. Ross
2 CONT preceded him in death in 1920.
2 CONT Mr. Ross lived on the farm his parents homesteaded until 1944 when he moved
2 CONT to Sioux Falls and was employed at the air base and at the YMCA there.
2 CONT He was well known for his hobby of rug weaving and his handiwork won
2 CONT numerous prizes at the Sioux Empire fair and state fairs.
2 CONT Mr. Ross leaves three daughters: Mrs L. R. (Hildred) Kremer, Sioux Falls;
2 CONT Mrs. V. K. (Helen) Boyer, Redfield; and Mrs. G. B. (Heloise) Johnston,
2 CONT Estherville, Iowa; one son, Howard, Athol; one sister, Mrs. R. A. Prindle,
2 CONT Athol; eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

2 CONT Lila Katherine Freimark was born at Hartley, Iowa, April 18,
2 CONT 1888. Here she
2 CONT lived until the summer of 1905 when she came to South Dakota. She
2 CONT attended
2 CONT scholl in St. Lawrence a few months then went to teaching. She
2 CONT taught five
2 CONT years, the last year of her teaching being at Sunbeam school.
2 CONT She was married to Edwin S. Ross July 21, 1909 at the home of her
2 CONT parents
2 CONT who were then living west of the Missouri River. Her few short years
2 CONT of married
2 CONT life have been lived on their farm in Holden township in Hand Co.
2 CONT Here she
2 CONT fulfilled her mission as a devoted wife and mother.
2 CONT During her last few days when her family were all sick with the
2 CONT influenza
2 CONT she remained up as long as possible caring for the others. Pneumonia
2 CONT and other
2 CONT complications soon developed and with all that medical skill and
2 CONT loved ones
2 CONT could do she could not resist this dreaded disease.
2 CONT She was called to her Heavenly Home on the evening of Feb. 11,
2 CONT 1920.
2 CONT She leaves to mourn her untimely death her husband, four
2 CONT children, Hildred,
2 CONT age 8, Howard, age 7, Helen age 5 and Heloise age 20 months; her
2 CONT father,
2 CONT mother, one sister, Hilda, and two brothers, Arnold and Rolland.
2 CONT She joined the Presbyterian church in St. Lawrence before her
2 CONT marriage,
2 CONT later bringing her letter to the Sunbeam Congregational church of
2 CONT Holden Twp.
2 CONT Words cannot express the loss that will be felt, first in her
2 CONT home and then
2 CONT by all her friends and neighbors. She was a faithful member of the
2 CONT Sunbeam
2 CONT Ladies Aid and in all social activities of the community she did her
2 CONT part.
2 CONT Chaplain Guy P. Squire, a friend of the family and former pastor,
2 CONT conducted
2 CONT services at the home on the afternoon of February 14th, 1920.
2 CONT Many beautiful floring offerings were contributed. Interment was
2 CONT made in the
2 CONT Sunbeam cemetery.

2 CONT I also checked the Marriage register for O'Brien county to see if the
2 CONT marriage applications gave places of birth.  Alas, all of the Erions wereshown
2 CONT as being born in Wisconsin, but no other place was shown.
2 CONT Looked through two townships of O'Brien Co. in the 1885 special Iowacensus,
2 CONT hoping to find the Tobias Erion family before any of the children weremarried,
2 CONT but did not find them at all in either Center or Hartley twps.
2 CONT The only History of O'Brien county was a 1914 edition, and there were no
2 CONT biographies of anyone in the ERION family.
2 CONT The 1900 census showed that the son Tobias was born in Jan. 1872, so the
2 CONT family should show up in an 1880 Soundex.  They weren't in the IowaSoundex, so
2 CONT maybe they were in Wisconsin's.  We don't have the WI 1880 Soundex in our
2 CONT libraries.

2 CONT OBITUARY OF TOBIAS ERION
2 CONT The deceased, Tobias Erion, the second oldest son of John Erion, was born
2 CONT on the 18 day of August 1831, in Aldinger, Wibbenberg, Germany. During his
2 CONT early childhood he emigrated to this country with his parents, settlingnear
2 CONT Town Herman, Dodge, Co., Wisconsin.  On the 27th day of June 1855 heentered
2 CONT into the estate of holy wedlock with Kathrine Scharmann.  This happyunion God
2 CONT blessed with eleven children, 5 sons and six daughters.
2 CONT Of these one daughter and two sons were called to preceed their fatherinto
2 CONT eternity.  In the year 1886 he came to Iowa, settling on the farm southof town
2 CONT now occupied by his son Tobias.  There on the old farm he spent the lastyears
2 CONT of his life passing away on Wednesday morning at six o'clock after a veryshort
2 CONT illness.  His aged wife and eight children survive him.  The age of the
2 CONT deceased was 79 years and five months.
2 CONT Besides his wife, the children who survive him are:  Mrs. E. Guenther,Mrs.
2 CONT C. Guenther, Mrs. P. Hartman, Mrs. D. Bermitt, Mrs. J. Freinmark andHenry,
2 CONT Mathew, and Tobias.  All of whom were present, except Henry who resides in
2 CONT Colorado, and was unable to get here.
2 CONT On Friday services were held from the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church
2 CONT the pastor Rev. Ad Schrine preaching from the text found in St. Luke 7,11-15.
2 CONT The deceased was one of our oldest and most respected citizens and in his
2 CONT death which is felt so keenly by his companion and children, we wish toassure
2 CONT them that they have the deepest sympathy from a large circle of friendsand the
2 CONT community at large.

2 CONT The deceased, Mrs. T. Erion, nee Katharina Scharmann, was born on the 27th
2 CONT day of September, 1836 in Helperschein, Hessen, Germany. In the year of 1854
2 CONT she immigrated to this country and settled near Town Hermann, Dodge County,
2 CONT Wisconsin. On the 27th day of June, 1855 she entered into the state of holy
2 CONT matrimony with Tobias Erion. This union God blessed with nine children, three
2 CONT sons and six daughters. One of these daughters was called to precede her into
2 CONT eternity. Also her husband preceded her into yonder world, he passing away on
2 CONT the 18th day of January this year.
2 CONT In the year 1886 she came to Hartley with her family and settled on the farm
2 CONT southwest of Hartley now occupied by her youngest son Tobias. During the latter
2 CONT years her health failed and she was entirely helpless in the last months. She
2 CONT was tenderly cared for by her children. During the first years ofher ailment
2 CONT she was at home with her son Mat, after his leaving Hartley, she took up abode
2 CONT with her oldest daughter, Mrs. Chas. Gunther. The last four weeks she spent in
2 CONT her old home. There on last Thursday morning at 7 o'clock she was called by the
2 CONT Savior. She is survived by 8 children, one brother, 23 grand children and 5
2 CONT great grand children. The time of her pilgimage is 74 years, 3 months and 26
2 CONT days.
2 CONT Last Saturday afternoon she was laid to rest. Rev. Schrein conducting the
2 CONT services. His oration he based on Psalm 4, 9. She is now resting in peace and
2 CONT is awaiting the final morning when all must appear before the judgement of
2 CONT Christ.
