D. Janes, and will hereafter keep house for him. 2 CONT The youngest son of Mr. Ross will carry on the farm. 2 CONT December 4, 1884: On Monday last Mr. I. D. Janes disposed of most of his 2 CONT personal property at a public sale. Fair prices were realized. 2 CONT January 22, 1885: Some time during the night of the 14th inst., Mr. John Ross, 2 CONT Jr., who now carries on the farm owned by Mr. I. D. Janes, had sixteen sheep 2 CONT killed by dogs. In addition to this, five more were badly wounded. He at once 2 CONT reported the loss to the town authorities, and in due course of time will 2 CONT receive pay for the same. Ross was born in North Carolina, and raised partly in Tennessee and 2 CONT Kentucky. He lost his parents in childhood; reached Illinois at about the age 2 CONT of twenty-one. He was advised by some stranger to get a New Testament, and read 2 CONT it through in order. This he did. He found that it not only told him of the 2 CONT true Saviour, but of the true creed and church. He soon became a Christian. He 2 CONT served several churches where he lived as an elder, viz.: Jacksonville, Little 2 CONT Mackinaw, Bloomington, and Twin Grove. 2 CONT He first married Miss Sarah A. Hedenberg at Jacksonville, Ill., April 17, 2 CONT 1834. Some five years after her death he married Miss Charlotte Hinsdall. He 2 CONT was the father of ten children, six of whom survive him. The 2 CONT expectant groom rode into Champaign, Ill. on a steam rode, expecting togo on 2 CONT to Urbana on the train, and from there drive three miles to the bride'shome. 2 CONT The train was abandoned because of the storm, but not to be daunted onsuch an 2 CONT auspicious occasion, Mr. Ross walked the three miles to Urbana through afoot 2 CONT of snow--and in his new wedding boots. Friends had met him as planned, sohe 2 CONT was spared the necessity of walking three miles further into the country.The 2 CONT minister, equally determined, did not fail the case, so the ceremony was 2 CONT consummated in spite of the storm. 2 CONT Mr. and Mrs. Ross left Illinois to come to South Dakota, settling inHolden 2 CONT township, Hand county April 4, 1883. E. Ross Passed Away Monday; Funeral Services held Wednesday 2 CONT Rest came to another pioneer when Mrs. E. E. Ross passed away at her home 2 CONT in Redfield following an illness of many weeks. Having lived in this community 2 CONT for so many years she was well known and loved by all. The place she held in 2 CONT the hearts of her children and friends can never be filled. Mrs. Ross has led 2 CONT the life of a typical pioneer, enduring many hardships that developed a strong 2 CONT and vigorous Christian character. 2 CONT Harriet Matthews was born March 4, 1855, at Mineral Point, Wisconsin. At 2 CONT the age of seven her parents moved to Illinois, the trip being made in a wagon 2 CONT pulled by oxen. On January 23, 1873, after a beautiful romance that remained 2 CONT ever young, she was united in marriage to Edwin E. Ross, who preceeded her in 2 CONT death three years ago. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Ross with three young children came 2 CONT to South Dakota. They took a claim thirty miles from Redfield. This they 2 CONT transformed into a beautiful farm from which they retired and moved to Redfield 2 CONT in 1909. In 1923 Mr. and Mrs. Ross celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. 2 CONT Mrs. Ross has always found a home in the church, having become a member at 2 CONT an early age. She has been a faithful member of the Congregational church, also 2 CONT a charter member of the Welfare Society of this city. Mrs. Ross has always led 2 CONT a life of service in her home and church. S. Ross. 2 CONT Lila Katherine Freimark was born at Hartley, Iowa, April 18, 2 CONT 1888. Here she 2 CONT lived until the summer of 1905 when she came to South Dakota. She 2 CONT attended 2 CONT scholl in St. Lawrence a few months then went to teaching. She 2 CONT taught five 2 CONT years, the last year of her teaching being at Sunbeam school. 2 CONT She was married to Edwin S. Ross July 21, 1909 at the home of her 2 CONT parents 2 CONT who were then living west of the Missouri River. Her few short years 2 CONT of married 2 CONT life have been lived on their farm in Holden township in Hand Co. 2 CONT Here she 2 CONT fulfilled her mission as a devoted wife and mother. 2 CONT During her last few days when her family were all sick with the 2 CONT influenza 2 CONT she remained up as long as possible caring for the others. Pneumonia 2 CONT and other 2 CONT complications soon developed and with all that medical skill and 2 CONT loved ones 2 CONT could do she could not resist this dreaded disease. 2 CONT She was called to her Heavenly Home on the evening of Feb. 11, 2 CONT 1920. 2 CONT She leaves to mourn her untimely death her husband, four 2 CONT children, Hildred, 2 CONT age 8, Howard, age 7, Helen age 5 and Heloise age 20 months; her 2 CONT father, 2 CONT mother, one sister, Hilda, and two brothers, Arnold and Rolland. 2 CONT She joined the Presbyterian church in St. Lawrence before her 2 CONT marriage, 2 CONT later bringing her letter to the Sunbeam Congregational church of 2 CONT Holden Twp. 2 CONT Words cannot express the loss that will be felt, first in her 2 CONT home and then 2 CONT by all her friends and neighbors. They weren't in the IowaSoundex, so 2 CONT maybe they were in Wisconsin's. During his 2 CONT early childhood he emigrated to this country with his parents, settlingnear 2 CONT Town Herman, Dodge, Co., Wisconsin. On the 27th day of June 1855 heentered 2 CONT into the estate of holy wedlock with Kathrine Scharmann. This happyunion God 2 CONT blessed with eleven children, 5 sons and six daughters. 2 CONT Of these one daughter and two sons were called to preceed their fatherinto 2 CONT eternity. In the year 1886 he came to Iowa, settling on the farm southof town 2 CONT now occupied by his son Tobias. There on the old farm he spent the lastyears 2 CONT of his life passing away on Wednesday morning at six o'clock after a veryshort 2 CONT illness. His aged wife and eight children survive him. One of these daughters was called to precede her into 2 CONT eternity. Also her husband preceded her into yonder world, he passing away on 2 CONT the 18th day of January this year. 2 CONT In the year 1886 she came to Hartley with her family and settled on the farm 2 CONT southwest of Hartley now occupied by her youngest son Tobias. During the latter 2 CONT years her health failed and she was entirely helpless in the last months. She 2 CONT was tenderly cared for by her children. During the first years ofher ailment 2 CONT she was at home with her son Mat, after his leaving Hartley, she took up abode 2 CONT with her oldest daughter, Mrs. Chas. Gunther. The last four weeks she spent in 2 CONT her old home. There on last Thursday morning at 7 o'clock she was called by the 2 CONT Savior. She is survived by 8 children, one brother, 23 grand children and 5 2 CONT great grand children.
