FIFTY YEARS OF MARRIED LIFE IS CELEBRATED
E. E. Ross Walked Three Miles Through
Foot of Snow for Nuptial EngagementThe E. E. Ross home was the scene of a very pretty event Tuesday afternoon
when Mr. and Mrs. Ross celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
The guests numbering about fifty consisted of the family and nearrelatives, a
number of old friends and neighbors from their former home near Burdette, and
many Redfield friends.
A fine program was rendered during the afternoon. Miss Avery, in herefficient
and charming manner, spoke a few words of advice to the bride and groomwhich
were received in a very good spirit by them and with much amusement by
all. The musical numbers consisted of a duet by Mr. and Mrs. Tiede andtwo solos by Mrs. Petrie, all of which were particularly fitting to theoccasion. Rev. Barter responded with a few fitting remarks into which hewove St. Paul's description of a true friend showing its application tothe lives of Mr. and Mrs. Ross. The rooms were tastefully decorated ingold paper garlands and
bells and the color scheme was further emphasized in the daintyrefreshments which were served at the close of the afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross were the recipients of many beautiful gifts.
The out of town guests were Mrs. Alex Gillmor of Miller; Mr. and Mrs. F.P.
Calkins, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Rush, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Morris, Mr. and Mrs.Chas
Grey and Mrs. C. L. Ferree of Burdette; Mr. E. S. Ross of St. Lawrence.
Mr. and Mrs. Petrie and daughter Phillis of Mansfield; Mrs. Anna Bushongof
Tulare; Mrs. D. D. Trout of Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Shephard ofHuron;
Mrs. E. W. Smith and children Gerald and Lois of Hawarden, Iowa; Mr. andMrs.
J. D. Prindle, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Prindle, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Reynoldsand Mr.
and Mrs. F. N. Twiss of Athol.
Mr. Ross recalls that fifty years ago Tuesday was a very different day in
Illinois than was last Tuesday in South Dakota. The day that he andHarriet D.
Mathews had chosen for their nuptial date proved to be a stormy one. The
expectant groom rode into Champaign, Ill. on a steam rode, expecting togo on
to Urbana on the train, and from there drive three miles to the bride'shome.
The train was abandoned because of the storm, but not to be daunted onsuch an
auspicious occasion, Mr. Ross walked the three miles to Urbana through afoot
of snow--and in his new wedding boots. Friends had met him as planned, sohe
was spared the necessity of walking three miles further into the country. The
minister, equally determined, did not fail the case, so the ceremony was
consummated in spite of the storm.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross left Illinois to come to South Dakota, settling inHolden
township, Hand county April 4, 1883. That was their home until they cameto
Redfield in 1909 and made their home on College Hill. They are highly
respected people held in kindly regard wherever they have lived. Theyhave three daughters and one son, who are Mrs. J. G. Shephard of Huron;Mrs. E. W. Smith of Hawarden, Iowa; Mrs. R. A. Prindle, of Athol; and E.S. Ross, of Wessington.
That Mr. and Mrs. Ross may enjoy many more anniversaries of their nuptial
event is the wish of their many friends.1920 US Census (soundex): Ross, Edwin E. Age 67, born Ill.

BIRTH, MARRIAGE, DEATH: Obituary, Redfield, SD "Journal-Observer,"
February 23, 1933Note that her family was at Fayette, Wisconsin in 1860 (see notes for her father, Michael Mathews).
From the Redfield (SD) Journal-Observer, Feb 23, 1933:
Redfield Citizen Called to Beyond
Mrs. E. E. Ross Passed Away Monday; Funeral Services held Wednesday
Rest came to another pioneer when Mrs. E. E. Ross passed away at her home
in Redfield following an illness of many weeks. Having lived in this community
for so many years she was well known and loved by all. The place she held in
the hearts of her children and friends can never be filled. Mrs. Ross has led
the life of a typical pioneer, enduring many hardships that developed a strong
and vigorous Christian character.
Harriet Matthews was born March 4, 1855, at Mineral Point, Wisconsin. At
the age of seven her parents moved to Illinois, the trip being made in a wagon
pulled by oxen. On January 23, 1873, after a beautiful romance that remained
ever young, she was united in marriage to Edwin E. Ross, who preceeded her in
death three years ago. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Ross with three young children came
to South Dakota. They took a claim thirty miles from Redfield. This they
transformed into a beautiful farm from which they retired and moved to Redfield
in 1909. In 1923 Mr. and Mrs. Ross celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Ross has always found a home in the church, having become a member at
an early age. She has been a faithful member of the Congregational church, also
a charter member of the Welfare Society of this city. Mrs. Ross has always led
a life of service in her home and church. She has been a dear and faithful
mother, and often took the place of a mother in the hearts of her several
grandchildren.
She was taken ill in November, from which she suffered acutely. She went
quietly into the great beyond early Monday morning surrounded by loved ones who
had been at her bedside during her illness.
She leaves on son, Edwin S. Ross of Redfield; three daughters, Mrs. J. S.
Shephard of Huron, Mrs. R. A. Prindle of Athol, and Mrs. E. W. Smith of
Hawarden, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Rolly Harper of Modoc, Indiana; thirteen
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon in
the Congregational church, Rev. R. M. Miller officiating. Interment was made in
Sunbeam cemetery, near the old home in Hand county.

From Hildred (Ross) Kremer, April, 1994: "Grandpa Freimark's sister Emma lived
at Dubuque. They drank beer with their meals." The family wanted Hildred out of
the way at the time of Heloise's birth, so Hildred and Grandma Freimark went on
a trip, to Fond du Lac and Hartford, WI, and to visit a Hopfe in Chicago.
