From an obituary supplied by Hildred Kremer (source, date unknown):
"Pioneer Woman Gone to her Reward"
Mrs. Charlotte Swanson of this city died in a hospital at Rochester, Minn. on Monday, February 16, 1920, her death being due to cancer. For the past year or more the deceased has been a sufferer from the malady which caused her demise, and which was not unexpected by her relatives and close friends. She sought medical aid in various institutions, but she received nothing but temporary relief. At times her suffering was so intense as to be almost unbearable, but she was a patient sufferer and always hoped for relief.
Her last attempt for relief was at Rochester, where she underwent an operation. After the operation for several days she appeared to be on the road to recovery, and the reports from the hospital was encouraging to her family and friends; but the end came last Monday. The remains of the deceased arrived here last Tuesday from Rochester, and were accompanied back by her son-in-law, Olaf Oleson, who was with her all of the time that she was in the hospital.
The deceased was one of the widely known pioneer women of the county. She had been a resident of Lesterville since 1901. Her husband, Frans Oscar Swanson, died August 19,1888, and from that time until she moved to Lesterville she personally conducted her large farm southeast of town; built it up and made a success of farming, even through the lean years and hard times of a new country. She was a business woman of more than ordinary ability and her efforts were always crowned with success.
The deceased always took and great interest and pride in her home and her home town, and was possessed of the progressive spirit that makes good citizenship. She was ever mindful of the needy and her excellent and noble character was amply exemplified in the many acts of charity that was extended to those in need. The life that she led was the life of a good Christian woman. For many years her devotion and efforts were bestowed upon the Congregational church in this city, and no one ever done more for a church or for Christianity than the deceased has done in Lesterville. She labored hard and earnestly for the promotion of the church and was always ready to lend aid where it was needed.
Charlotte Rosewall was born Oct. 26, 1851, at Malmo, Sweden. She came to Yankton, Dakota territory, July 12, 1876, and was married to Mr.Frans Oscar Swanson on October 20, 1879. They resided on the homestead southeast of Lesterville until Mr. Swanson's death in 1888. After the death of her husband she remained on the farm until 1901. To this union three children were born: Clara, who died July 14, 1902; Emma (now Mrs.Emma Kremer) and Bertha (now Mrs. O. H. Oleson). Besides she is survived by three brothers and one sister in Sweden, and one brother Fred Roswall, of this place.
The funeral was held at 11 o'clock Thursday from the Congregationalchurch at Yankton, the services being conducted by Rev. Stevens, and interment was made in the Yankton cemetery. The bereaved relatives and friends have the heartfelt sympathy of all in this their great sorrow.Letter from Verda Roswell says that she came to the US in July 1876.
