P. KREMER LOST HIS LIFE IN AUTO ACCIDENT 2 CONT Found Dead on Roadside Two 2 CONT Hours After Accident 2 CONT Happened. 2 CONT At about 4:15 o'clock Friday afternoon, Nov. 2nd, telephone intelligence came to the cen 2 CONC tral office in Janda & Son's store that N. P. Kremer was found under his new Ford car on th 2 CONC e north side of theMilwaukee Railway crossing near the Gus Schumaker home. Dr. F. A. Moore t 2 CONC o whom the message was sent hurried immediately to the scene. About 10 minutes later anothe 2 CONC r phone message came saying that Mr. Kremer was dead. This news spread over town like wildfi 2 CONC re and many hastened to the scene. The news of Mr. Kremer's untimely death nearly overcome t 2 CONC he population and many could scarcely believe it was true. 2 CONT The writer was one of the first to learn of the sad occurance and in company with severa 2 CONC l others went out to the place and the following is as near a correct statement of facts as i 2 CONC t is possible to arrive at. Mr. Kremer left for town at about 2 o'clock that afternoon wit 2 CONC h his new Ford car. It was the baby's third birthday anniversary and Mr. Kremer was to brin 2 CONC g back the baby's grandma, Mrs. C. Swanson, and some goods that Mrs. Kremer had ordered ove 2 CONC r the phone at Janda's store. The road leading from the house to the main road to the east c 2 CONC omes out just at the railroad crossing and Mr. Kremer had to make a short turn from the gat 2 CONC e onto the main road. In making this short turn it appears that he, being an inexperienced d 2 CONC river, was not able to get the car straight on the road soon enough to save himself and car f 2 CONC rom going over the embankment on the north side of the railroad track. At this place the acc 2 CONC ident occurred. 2 CONT Just after 4 o'clock Neva, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Schumaker, upon retur 2 CONC ning from school, which is only a short distance away from the spot where the accident happen 2 CONC ed, noticed the new car turned over in the ditch along side the road and she hurried home an 2 CONC d asked her mother if any of the Kremer folks had been injured as their car was upset. Mrs 2 CONC . Schumaker and the little girl hurried back to where the car was and after an inspection fou 2 CONC nd that Mr. Kremer lay beneath it.This was the first that was known of the accident. Mrs. Sc 2 CONC humaker sent the little girl after Mr. Schumaker who was husking corn in a field about a half 2 CONC -mile away and she went back to the house and called up Lesterville on the phone as related a 2 CONC bove. 2 CONT Upon arriving at the scene Dr. Moore and others turned the car up and found that Mr. Kre 2 CONC mer was dead; that his back had been broken and that death was instantaneous, and that life h 2 CONC ad been extent for at least two hours, as he laid face down and there was not the slightest e 2 CONC videnceof a struggle. Dr. Moore went to the Schumaker home and called up the county corone 2 CONC r and related what happened to him. Dr. Moore made a very close inspection of the scene and t 2 CONC here was no trace or sign of a collision, and no witness could be found who had seen the acci 2 CONC dent occur; so Coroner F. C. Smith decided that the death of Mr. Kremer was purely accidenta 2 CONC l and that no inquest would be necessary, and permission was given Dr. Moore to remove the bo 2 CONC dy. After receiving this information the corpse was removed from the scene of the accident a 2 CONC nd taken back to the house. It was indeed a sad affair when the news had to be broken to Mrs 2 CONC . Kremer who was without knowledge of what had happened up until a short time before her dea 2 CONC d husband was brought back to her. 2 CONT OBITUARY 2 CONT Nicholas P. Kremer was born on a farm near Lesterville January 28,1875, and was in his 4 2 CONC 2nd year and just in the prime of life. When a young man he started out in life for himsel 2 CONC f and entered the grain business. One of his first experiences was at Springfield this state 2 CONC . After a season he came back to Lesterville and in partnership with J. J. Wagner he was enga 2 CONC ged in the saloon business, but he did not remain long in this business. Then he entered th 2 CONC e Lesterville State Bank where he learned the banking business. After the Utica State Bank w 2 CONC as opened up Mr. Kremer was sent there to take charge of that bank as cashier. During his s 2 CONC tay in Utica he proved himself and (sic) efficient and trustworthy business man and made man 2 CONC y friends for the institution he represented and himself. In March 1905 he resigned his posi 2 CONC tion with the Utica State Bank and in connection with the writer purchased The Lesterville Le 2 CONC dger. He remained a one-half owner of The Ledger until November 1907, when he sold his inter 2 CONC est to the present owner. At this time he was local agent for the McCaull-Webster Elevator C 2 CONC ompany which position he retained until he (something missing here?) was endowed with a trai 2 CONC t of character which made for him friends of every person of his acquaintanceship. He was ki 2 CONC nd to all. He never did an unkind act or deed to a fellow man, and carried the best respec 2 CONC t and highest esteem of the whole community in which he lived his whole life. He was an exce 2 CONC llent husband and a kind and true father, and his loss to his family, especially, as he had j 2 CONC ust reached the prime of life is indeed great, too great for words to adequately express, an 2 CONC d his loss is no less to the community and his legion of friends throughout the county and st 2 CONC ate, as Mr. Kremer was a widely known and popular man. 2 CONT The funeral was held Monday at 10 o'clock a.m. from the home. Funeral services at the ho 2 CONC me were conducted by Rev. Stevens of Yankton, and the services at the cemetery were conducte 2 CONC d by the Elks. Interment was made in the Yankton cemetery. The vast multitude who attende 2 CONC d the last sad rites and the profusion of floral offerings attested to the popularity and hig 2 CONC h esteem in which the deceased was held. The pallbearers were: Dr. F. A. Moore, Joseph Lukes 2 CONC , N. M. Karolewicz, Edward Freidel, J. J. Wagner and F. A. Killion. 2 CONT The Ledger in connection with the whole community extend heartfelt sympathy and condolen 2 CONC ce, to the widowed wife, fatherless children and bereaved brothers and sisters in their hou 2 CONC r of deep sorrow. 2 CONT 2 CONT From the "Lesterville Ledger" Sep 22, 1916 (provided by Rochelle Kremer,1104 Lawnridge Ave. 2 CONC , Springfield OR 97477): "N. He estimates that he has produced approximately 150 plays, including hi 2 CONC s Theatre-In-The-Round plays, since he has been in Sioux Falls. 2 CONT Before coming to Sioux Falls, the Yankton native earned his bachelor's degree at Yankto 2 CONC n College in 1933. In 1956, he was awarded his master's degree from the University of South D 2 CONC akota at Vermillion. "I guess my whole life revolves around the theater. I even met my wife i 2 CONC n a play I was in while attending Yankton College. I remember we drove up to the University o 2 CONC f South Dakota in Vermillion to present the play, and my wife-to-be and I had to ride in diff 2 CONC erent cars because of one of the rules of the school," he said. 2 CONT Kremer and his wife, Hildred, were married in Kansas in 1934. "I'll never forget that pl 2 CONC ay Hildred and I were in in Yankton; she was the only good thing to come out of it - it was t 2 CONC he lousiest play I've ever been in," Kremer said. 2 CONT Barney and Hildred toured together for 3 1/2 years in Kansas, Arkansas, and Minnesota wi 2 CONC th stock and repertory companies. In addition to writing a speech workbook in 1946, Kremer al 2 CONC so has a successful play to his credit. Throngs of Sioux Falls citizens cried "Author!" in 19 2 CONC 69 when the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse produced his play "The Song of the Morning Star. 2 CONC " The play was the winner of the South Dakota playwriting contest in 1968 - or at least a co- 2 CONC winner. Kremer's play, along with a play written by Ronald Robinson, a professor at Augustana 2 CONC , were both judged as first place winners. Robinson requested that Kremer's play be produce 2 CONC d and withdrew his. 2 CONT Other honors given Kremer include publicity director for the South Dakota Speech Teacher 2 CONC s Association, president of the North Central Theater Association, archivist of the Secondar 2 CONC y School Theater Conference, president of the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse and being liste 2 CONC d in Who's Who in the Midwest. 2 CONT Kremer says that one of his most satisfying experiences at Washington was in the late 40 2 CONC 's when he produced "The Willow and I." "Theschool needed a sound system at that time, so I s 2 CONC uggested that the students be admitted free if they sold one ticket each. We took in enough m 2 CONC oney from that play to buy the first sound system for the high school," he said. 2 CONT The biggest money-maker for Kremer at Washington was "Time Out For Ginger," in the 1950s 2 CONC . "The play was about a girl who wanted to play football, so we dedicated the play to coach B 2 CONC ob Burns, who was the football coach at that time. Coach Burns had a fantastic win streak a 2 CONC t that time, and I guess you could say we had a pretty good win streak with 'Ginger'," Kreme 2 CONC r said. 2 CONT "The Diary of Anne Frank" in 1959 was Kremer's big "scoop" in the theater. "We beat ever 2 CONC ybody to the punch with that play. I was in Washington, D.C., at the time they released the p 2 CONC lay to the public for use by high schools, and immediately came back to Sioux Falls and put i 2 CONC t on in the spring of 1960," he said. 2 CONT Kremer started the Children's Theater 21 years ago with "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater." O 2 CONC riginally the plays were produced at Washington for the elementary school children, but as th 2 CONC e city grew, the students started to take the plays to the elementary schools. "I produced m 2 CONC y last Children's Theater play last year, and it was appropriate that my final play was the s 2 CONC ame as my first - "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater," he said. 2 CONT Kremer has had a long and exciting life, and for sure there are many, many exciting year 2 CONC s to come, but the Young People's Theater group in Sioux Falls decided they wanted to honor K 2 CONC remer now. So Monday, Dec.11 at 7 p.m. at the Downtown Holiday Inn, many of Kremer's old frie 2 CONC nds and students will gather to pay tribute to a living legend in Sioux Falls. 2 CONT 2 CONT L. R.
